Planning to start your writing journey? Here are 5 simple tips that would help you develop this incredibly powerful habit and skill!
Writing is a powerful tool and my favourite weapon of love!
I am grateful to you for your support and for helping me build my audience. I would like to provide some useful tips to get you started on your writing journey. I will keep these simple as writing shouldn’t be a laborious task but an expression of our deepest emotions.
Tip #1
Find a quiet place to write:
As James Clear mentions in his book Atomic Habits, the right environment is critical to forming the desired habits. Writing, like any other form of art, requires silence. Chaos in your mind is an extremely useful tool to be creative on paper but chaos outside while you are performing the task distracts more than it helps.
Tip #2
Use pen and paper to start:
It is easy to get sucked into the world of technology while you are planning to write. I too, for the most part, write on my laptop but technology can be distracting while you are trying to focus on your thoughts. The internet needs to be shut off or your devices need to be in a focus mode where no notifications come through to disturb you from writing.
Tip #3
Focus on your thoughts, not what you want to write:
We all desire to write pieces that would be considered epic pieces of literature, newsworthy work, or advice that would help others and earn us the recognition we desire but that should not be why you start writing. Writing is a form of self-expression that needs nurturing and practice. You will get better over time but don’t pressure yourself to write a masterpiece on your first day of writing.
Tip #4
Allocate time in the day to write:
Like all other activities in your life, allocate time in your calendar to write. The words may not always flow but you will develop the practice of writing daily, even if it’s only a paragraph, which will help you build a strong skillset.
Tip #5
Read:
While writing is an excellent tool to express oneself, reading is the tool that helps you keep inspired to write. There are more than enough resources in every piece of literature to provide you with a reason to write. If you like what you are reading, you will find inspiration from it, if you don’t like what you just read or are reading, you can find a way to write it better. If you are stuck in your writing rituals, read and the words will begin to flow, again.
Hope these help you start your writing journey! I will continue to share more tips in the coming weeks.
If you think these tips would help someone you know, feel free to share them.
Happy writing!
